Mohawk Group enters commercial hardwood market

Posted Date: 5/28/2015

[Calhoun, Ga.] Mohawk Group recently launched Reroot, a commercial line of engineered hardwood for light commercial spaces, in an effort to expand its hard surface offering. This is the company’s first foray into commercial hardwood.

Angie Carter, senior manager of brand marketing for Mohawk Group, said as the company continues to grow its hard surface product offerings, it recognized there is still a strong desire for the aesthetic appeal and high-end elegance that only hardwood can bring to a commercial space.

“As we looked ahead, we knew that having commercial hardwood would not only enhance our hard surface offering but offer our customers an additional product solution for these types of impressionable spaces. It is also important that our products work together across product platforms and Reroot pairs beautifully with our new Karastan carpet introductions,” she said.

In fact, Carter said that it was the launch of the new Karastan Collection that made the timing right for Reroot. As well, marrying soft and hard surface introductions provides solution-based products for its customers.

“Reroot offers that same high-end luxury of curated woods that coordinate beautifully with our Karastan and Mohawk Group products,” she said. “Our Karastan woven product collections offer a feel of high-end luxury and sophistication, and knowing that these types of end-use environments also include hardwood, it was a void we were missing in our hard surface portfolio. The integration of design, color and cross-coordination is a priority to our product development team, so when designers are selecting products that need to coordinate from one space to the other, our products work seamlessly together,” she said. “You will see us continue to market hard surface and carpet products together moving forward.”

Opportunity grows for commercial hardwood

Carter said that with all of the advancements in hardwood construction and finishes, it has become a more commercial friendly product. With Reroot, Carter said Mohawk Group sees growth opportunities specifically in hospitality, retail, assisted living and corporate spaces.

“Commercial hardwood is primarily an aesthetic solution that transforms an area by making a statement of distinct character and relaxed luxury appeal. Because it is real wood, we recommend it for light commercial usage and should only be installed in spaces where there is not heavy rolling loads or heavy foot traffic,” noted Carter. “We see it being installed in areas like retail-boutiques, assisted living and hospitality.”

Reroot’s cross-grain construction of layered inner plies work together to maintain stability, durability and strength. This, explained Carter, allows is to be a good fit for light commercial applications.

“Reroot has an enhanced urethane finish which protects against normal wear and it carries a five year commercial light warranty,” she said.

Offering a variety of installation options for commercial interiors, all of Mohawk’s engineered commercial hardwood products can be glued directly to a concrete subfloor or nailed on any grade level, said Carter. Additionally, all products can be floated over underlayment for fast, versatile installation.

Reroot’s aesthetics

Reroot offers looks that Carter said are a perfect fit for commercial environments. Reclaim Revival, for example, is an antique oak character product in a wide and long 7.5" x 72" engineered format featuring the company’s Uniclic Multi-Fit Locking System for tight connection between joints, quick installation and immediate move-in.

City Feel is a redefined oak product featuring a modern 7" wide plank. According to Carter, colors of the collection are complemented with a low luster finish, while a wire brushed texture enhances the wood's linear grain pattern. The line’s Collector’s Edition is a rustic product with a soft-scraped surface offered in traditional colors and a versatile 5" width. According to Carter, textural movement across the oak, hickory and maple planks helps to hide wear and offers a handcrafted look.

Mohawk will be adding six more collections to its new commercial wood offering in the next month, noted Carter, and they will feature various aesthetics, sizes and price points.
