Cozy in the kitchen with rugs

This vintage Swedish flatweave by Marianne Richter is a perfect pop of color to spruce up kitchen space.
When looking for a new home or planning a remodel, the kitchen is often considered the most important room. And while it’s an expensive job, adding accessories can easily make the room feel homey. Perhaps that’s why there is a rise in popularity of kitchen rugs today.

Area rugs have long been a staple of interiors, but today they are making their way into kitchen settings. In addition to style, kitchen rugs are a practical choice for what might be considered the busiest room in the house. Not only are they water-friendly, but they are good underfoot for heavy traffic. And according to Nader Bolour, owner of rug dealer Doris Leslie Blau, it’s the durability of kitchen rugs that is making all the difference.

“A kitchen rug should be, above all, durable,” Bolour told FCW. “Flatweave rugs in either wool yarns or acrylic yarns suitable for indoor/outdoor use are both cleanable and durable.” Cleanability is indeed important to remember in kitchens as well as durability and comfort underfoot.
“A kitchen rug or runner alleviates your leg fatigue in front of the sink and it protects the floor from unavoidable stains occurring in the kitchen while adding texture, color and pattern to the décor,” Bolour added.

He noted too that the kitchen is a place for a casual look. “If the rug is both colorful and/or has a busy design throughout, this will contribute to the durable aspect, as eventual stains, predictable in a kitchen setting, would be less noticeable,” he advised.

He added that international rug designs or vintage looks of the past are worth trying in the kitchen. “You can opt for an antique or vintage rug that already has a wonderful patina. Or you can simply draw the inspiration for a new rug from colorful Moroccan flatweaves, Bessarabian kilims with floral and geometric batik-style motifs or minimalistic Scandinavian rugs.”

And the best way to accent kitchen rug designs throughout the room? “A neutral wall color or a bold wall color picked up from the rug would round off the décor while complementing the rug, which can become the center piece of the kitchen,” Bolour recommended.
