HMTX Garners Two Planet Positive Awards

Wednesday, November 1, 2023

[Norwalk, Conn.] HMTX Industries received two accolades from Metropolis magazine’s Planet Positive Awards: The Cutting Edge of Sustainable Design, which recognize the most creative global projects and products that benefit people and planet.

In the project category, the Workplace Corporate Headquarters Award was bestowed to HMTX along with Perkins&Will and McLennan Design for the HMTX World Headquarters in Norwalk, CT. In presenting the award, Metropolis Editor in Chief Avinash Rajagopal commented that companies are seeking to do more good, not just less harm, as demonstrated in the pursuit of the Living Building Challenge from the International Living Future Institute. “This year’s winner showcases how private enterprise is thinking beyond its footprint and the organization’s,” said Rajagopal. “The HMTX World Headquarters sets a new standard for green building in Connecticut. The building respects the surrounding natural landscape. It is powered by renewable energy onsite, the design team has prioritized low carbon materials, and water was an integral element in the design, recharging the water table through storm water rain gardens.”

In the competitive Flooring Hard category known for advanced sustainable manufacturing processes, the Mycelium Collection of SRPÔ Rigid Core TPU flooring garnered an Honorable Mention. Introduced at NeoCon 2023 in June, the Mycelium Collection is an entirely new, red list free, multilayer flooring system bred from innovations in sustainability, the circular economy, and biophilic design. SRP Rigid Core TPU flooring is an alchemy of responsible beauty that transforms waste plastic bottles into innovative flooring, designed with circularity in mind. Two plastic bottles (PET) are upcycled into each square foot of SRP flooring, which is constructed with a PET top layer, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) core layer, and a cross-linked polyurethane foam back layer.

SRP flooring can be transformed into an engineered TPU, providing HMTX the ability to recycle each plank into new planks and giving it the capability of being a circular product. HMTX is currently putting in place a takeback program to facilitate this.

Said HMTX Chief Sustainability & Impact Officer Rochelle Routman, “All of us at HMTX are extremely grateful for this recognition for both our corporate headquarters and the new SRP product category from such a highly respected publication as Metropolis. Putting ourselves out front is nothing new for HMTX, and this is what has to be done to benefit the planet at this critical juncture.”
